Flowing-Power-Accents - 2 day taiko workshop in Hamburg for experienced taiko players on 7th-8th of May

↓ Deutscher Text unten ↓

Hi Taiko-People in Europe,

the European Taiko Conference was a mind-opening experience for me! With a new and open mind, I was thinking about in which way I could contribute something to the community from my taiko style, which differs from most other styles quite a bit!

I see many taiko players using a tight grip on the bachi and using rather much force when hitting the drum. There are ways of hitting the drum, that have a close connection with the rules of physics. When you use a loose grip on the bachi and move your body in a certain flowing motion, you can actually play relaxed longer and get a more powerful and better sounding/looking stroke on the taiko at the same time. The paradox, that less force can mean more taiko-power is the secret I am telling you already now, even before the workshop starts ;-)

For Participants of the European Taiko Conference: In Shoji Kamedas Workshop I was surprised, how many similarities there were between his way of moving and the style I teach. There were still clear differences, but the similarities were „striking“! So if you wan’t to get an idea in which direction the workshop will go, it will be in Shojis, but maybe even a little further in terms of looseness and flow.

In the 10 years I’ve been teaching taiko in the style deriving from Tawoo/Gocoo I’ve been teaching many lessons that focus on the principle of less force but more power. It would be a interesting experience to share these ideas with intermediate or advanced players from other groups and styles! The aim of the workshop isn’t that the participants copy my style of playing (although in the first part of the workshop copying will be an important part). The aim rather is, that you find a way to incorporate the benefits of the aspects learned in the workshop with your style of playing and make it into your style!

As the flowing motions we’ll practice in the workshop are exceptionally well suited for playing fast, accentuated patterns, we will also spend some time in the workshop, playing some of those. So I think we’ll get a nice balance of technical training and some grooving jam sessions also!

If you can’t make it to the workshop in Hamburg, but you are interested me bringing the workshop to your group in your town, please write me a message, maybe we can make that happen!

Flowing-Power-Accents - 2-Tages-Workshop für erfahrene Taiko-Spieler in Hamburg

Hallo Taiko-Spieler in Europa,
